Her parents were notable abolitionists, and had worked for the Underground Railroad in Manhattan. Her ode “Lincoln” was read at the unveiling of the Emancipation Memorial in Washington, DC, in April 1876. She died in 1916.

She served as poet laureate consultant in poetry to the Library of Congress from 1993 to 1995, becoming the first African American appointed to the position after it was established in 1986.
